Balderdash!: John Newbery and the Boisterous Birth of Children’s Books | Little Lit Book Series

This month’s theme for #littlelitbookseries is writers and writing and we’re kicking it off with this decidedly apropos title from @picturethisbook:

We loved reading this picture book biography of the man the prestigious award was named after: John Newbery, one of the earliest publishers and champions of children’s literature. From the bold title to the humorous text and lively illustrations, this picture book is in itself a reminder of the immense progress in children’s literature since those dark days of “preachy poems and fables... religious text... and manuals” and how lucky we all are to have such a wealth of quality books to read to our kids today, and we salute all the good men and women who have worked so hard to continue this important legacy.

Balderdash!: John Newbery and the Boisterous Birth of Children’s Books was written by Michelle Markel, illustrated by Nancy Carpenter and published by Chronicle Books.
