Take Me Out to the Yakyu

Take Me Out to the Yakyu | Little Lit Book Series

Any baseball fans out there?  Experience what it’s like to go to a baseball game in America and Japan with a Japanese American boy and his grandfathers.  American baseball food means hot dogs and peanuts, but in Japan, it’s soba and edamame!  Such interesting cultural differences to note but in the end, the strongest commonality is the love for the game.  And time well spent with family!  Aaron Meshon does a terrific job contrasting the two cultures with his easy-going, jovial illustrations.  This one’s a home run.

Take Me Out to the Yakyu was written and illustrated by Aaron Meshon and published by Atheneum Books for Young Readers.

This month we’re featuring books about culinary traditions.

Here Is the World is a lovely and meaningful walk through the year of Jewish holidays and their associated food traditions — from eating apples and honey to ensure a sweet year during Rosh Hashannah to celebrating the harvesting of the wheat and the ripening of the first fruit on Shauvot.  Clear and informative explanations about each holiday are found in the back matter.

Here Is the World: A Year of Jewish Holidays was written by Lesléa Newman, illustrated by Susan Gal and published by Abrams Books for Young Readers.
